Ever since high school Mark Lammi has always had an appreciation for lowriders and the artwork represented within the culture. However, it wasn’t until 2003 when he moved from Milwaukee, WI., to the West Coast to start a glassblowing apprenticeship as his love and appreciation for the lowrider culture truly began to blossom.
Being a glassblower by trade, he immediately began to see ways to incorporate glass elements into some lowrider bike designs. Mark says “I was instantly drawn to the smooth flowing lines of the bike and intricate pinstriping detail much like I am to the different patterns in glass.” Mark wanted to develop some ideas that are unique and innovative to the world of lowriding or at least what he had seen thus far. He began working on his own lowrider show bike; which he eventually added glass parts and accents too. He then started making glass parts for his Cadillac Fleetwood as well.
At around the same time, Mark became good friends with a member of Uniques Car Club (Lane County, OR Chapter). The club introduced Mark to a whole new world of lowriding and dedication for the sport and culture. “My club is extremely important to me and I try to represent it to the fullest extent in my life and my artwork.”
After years of mastering his craft in the glass world, Mark had begun to shift his focus almost solely to customizing lowrider bikes, pedal cars, Taylor Tot baby strollers and other vintage toys. But he still finds ways to work his glass into these custom toys to give them that unique element. As he puts it, “ I will always be a glassblower but my love and my passion is Lowriding. My artwork is just an extension of that.”
