I always looked forward to the
Day Of The Dead celebration
while I was living in Mexico
because our neighborhood
would transform itself. The streets
and our neighbor's home were
decorated with Papel Picado in
bright colors, the smell of Copal
would be soothing the streets
while the altars were decorated
with marigolds and candles in
memory of the special people
that have passed away. My family
would always gather together
to celebrate and remember the
friends and family members who
have passed away. Our tradition
included sugar skulls that would
disappear one at a time because
my cousin and I would always
take them and eat them. I
remember my grandma cooking
the favorite dishes of the people
that had passed away and the
bottle of tequila was always on
display along with some other
things like cigars, playing cars,
and my uncles favorite soda
Penafiel.
In this issue we teamed up with
some past artists that have had
their artwork grace the pages of
Lowrider Arte and some artwork
of some new ones. So please
show them some love by visiting
their websites and their MySpace
pages so we can show them the
support that they deserve.
In this issue we also had the
opportunity to sit down with
Kiki Platas while he shares some
of his personal Day Of The Dead
artwork with us. Kiki's Day Of
The Dead artwork is collected
by people all over the world and
his travels have shown him that
he has not forgotten where he
came from by immortalizing his
artwork on peoples esh. Kiki
also did us a favor and drew
up a custom cover just for the
magazine and he is also the
man behind my new Day Of
The Dead tattoo that adorns
my leg.
Also in our Hotspot section
we show you how our Homie
Bigg Shadow took Roswell,
New Mexico, by storm by
building the rst ever Latino
based gallery along with his
new tattoo shop in the heart of
downtown Roswell.
In our Flesh Art section we
headed to the Ink-N-Iron tattoo
festival at Queen Mary in Long
Beach, California, were the elite
of the elite in the tattoo world
joined together to show their
skills o . The three-day event
housed some of the best artists
from around the world and
numerous awards were given
away to some of the best Black
and Grey Artist that attended
the event.
I would like to extend my
thanks to all the people that
made this issue possible and
for taking the time o to create
new pieces that will captivate
and inspire future artists. So
if you want your artwork to
be showcased in the future
issue of Arte remember to read
the rules on submitting your
artwork and keep those pencils
sharp.
Thanks,
